A lot of work in different areas goes on simultaneously at Hill, and it has been some time since we reported on the composites work, where the main focus at the moment is getting ourselves production ready. Dave and the team are having a lot of success working systematically through all the process parameters we need to make robust production-ready moulds for the fuselage.

A lot has been learned regarding the infusion process, so that some of techniques and methodologies have been altered, as demonstrated in a new pattern that has been completely painted and polished to give a much better finish. That also that helps with sealing of the tool to enable a really good vacuum. The aim was to have no leaks and to hold a 100% vacuum, and this has now been achieved.
The team made a part mould using the improved paint process and it has worked out beautifully – looking at the edges it is completely consolidated, there’s no air in it, no dry patches, and despite being on vacuum for a week without a pump the vacuum has been maintained at 95%.
We’re ready to go
Another lesson learned was the necessity to bootlace corners, and this has also been incorporated into the next step which is the full mould. The results have been impressive - the flow is better, and the big difference is that it infused in under 3 hours, which represents massive progress. All this mould needs now is to be trimmed and to have a vacuum check.
